Yesterday, members of our Board of Directors packed for Carolyn’s upcoming trip to Mtaya. Items included school supplies, jewelry-making supplies, and pillowcases from our recent collection drive. The ladies in the village sewing group will soon turn these pillowcases into dresses for the girls who attend our school. We look forward to seeing pictures of our students wearing their adorable new dresses!

This Friday, Carolyn will depart for Mtaya, Zambia. As always, she will be visiting with the villagers and our students in order to distribute items and assess their current status and needs. Additionally, we’re thrilled to announce the impending construction of our first teacher house. Thanks to our amazing and generous donors, we have been able to fund this first residence; however, we still need the continued support of kind people like yourselves in order to raise funds for the remaining three houses and retain the teachers who have meant so much to our children at the Children of Mtaya school.

Check back for updates with pictures and personal accounts from villagers on how Children of Mtaya has improved their lives!

The Ed and Emily Library is named in honor of my parents’ best friends. My mother, Marjorie, and Emily met in Washington D.C. during World War II. They immediately became best friends and their friendship lasted over fifty years. Emily married Edmund da Silveira and my mother married Clarence Kulisheck. Our two families felt as close to each other as true relatives. The da Silveiras spent many years in South America with the State Department but whenever they came to Washington, we had a grand reunion. Marjorie, Clarence, Emily and Ed have all passed on. When the da Silveira’s daughter Nancy received her inheritance, she wanted part of it to go to the Mtaya project in honor of her parents.

~Carolyn Kulisheck

In Nancy’s words:

Carolyn’s mother and my mother shared an apartment in Washington, D.C. in the 1940′s and remained lifelong best friends. I grew up calling Carolyn’s mother “Aunt” and thinking of Carolyn as a cousin. My mother was always one of Carolyn’s most enthusiastic supporters. Coming from a family of educators, she would have been especially proud of Carolyn’s school project in Zambia. My father grew up orphaned in a poor area overseas with limited opportunities, overcoming these challenges through education and the encouragement of strangers. He and my mother, Edmund and Emily, met and fell in love in graduate school. They shared a belief in the power of education, a great love of books and a special place in their hearts for Carolyn. There is no better way to honor their memory than a library, where others can enrich their lives and broaden their world through books.
